Manfred Bernardo is a psychic and spirit medium. Manfred has been able to commune with spirits since he was a child, often being ridiculed for it. Manfred was raised by his Romanichal grandmother Xylda. They lived in an RV that was constantly on the move, never settling down in one place for too long.
Manfred would help his grandmother run cons and grift people. Despite their abilities being very real, they pretended in front of others that it was all a con. A year before the series takes place, Xylda dies from throat cancer, but her spirit remains with Manfred through much of the series.
Manfred ends up in Midnight at his grandmother's behest. A man named Hightower wanted revenge on the Bernardo clan for a con that resulted in the suicide of his daughter. Manfred arrived in town and was immediately greeted by the Midnighters. Manfred would soon become part of the town, doing his part to protect it from evil.
Manfred is able to summon ghosts and speak with the dead, as well as become a vessel for spiritual creatures.
For a while, Manfred abused opioids in order to cope with the grief of losing Xylda and the after-effects of spirit possession.
Manfred becomes romantically involved with Creek Lovell, much to her father's chagrin.
