Angel and Demon Relationships: English 400 Comparison

Updated: Dec 8, 2020

Joe and Chuy have a relationship that's similar to the two protagonist from Gaiman and Pratchett's Good Omens, Crowley and Aziraphale.

Key Themes

One of the Key themes in Midnight, Texas and Good Omens is comparing and contrasting different ideologies.

Both couples have conflicting ideals about Good and evil, however their personal beliefs aren't very different. As an Angel, both Joe and Azriaphale did not fully align with God and the host. Joe did not feel an affinity for demon slaughter, and a demon with good morals was enough to cause him to question God. Aziraphale is inherently good, yet there are moments in the show where he questions the actions of those in higher ranks. Chuy and Crowley are demons by birth, but their nature is mercurial rather than evil. This lets viewers know that: Good and evil are subjective.

  • Crowley tempting Eve to eat the forbidden fruit is an example of good and evil being subjective. Crowley felt that giving humans the knowledge of good and evil was a good thing.

Another theme is the emphasis on individual prowess rather than depending on a higher power. Although there are religious motifs in both shows, the underlying theme is a humanist one. When faced with the inevitable arrival of Colconnor, the Midnighters took matters into their own hands rather than petition a diety. Instead of accepting God's plan, Crowley and Azriaphale took it upon themselves to find a third route, one that would be beneficial to humanity.

  • Crowley and Aziraphale showed young Adam that he had a choice (Free Will)

  • Joe shared with the midnighters his vision of Colconnor rising, instead of running away like he initially planned, he chose to stay and fight for humanity.

Midnight, Texas and Good Omens are great at demonstrating all forms of love. In a culture where there are varying degrees of sexuality and gender fluidity, these series showcase different forms of relationships that reject old social norms. Scott Poole touched on this subject in his essay Satan in America. Poole theorized that Satan was used as a scapegoat, a way to discourage deviation from the church and repress sexual freedom. One of the reasons why fallen Angels and Demons are so popular right now, I believe, stems from the idea of rebelling against social norms, the higher power, i.e. God and religion. Instead of adhering to the rigidity of organized religion, our society has allowed more room for sexual expression.

  • In Good Omens, Crowley and Aziraphale's relationship is open to interpretation. One can view it as deeply platonic or merely an asexual romance.

  • In Midnight, Texas, There are relationships between the living and the undead; and ex-white supremacist and an African-American wiccan; A fallen angel and a half-demon. In the small town of Midnight, it's all possible.
